Courses are offered at the Adult Education Center for individuals needing basic help with reading and math, as well as for those who require assistance in preparing for the GED test. Classes are offered mornings, afternoons, and evenings, Monday - Thursday. Individuals who are at least 16 years old and no longer enrolled in school may attend classes.
Adult Basic Skills courses reinforce basic literacy skills, and emphasize a focus on improvement of reading, writing, and communication skills. They also focus on the improvement of mathematical skills, such as computational and reasoning abilities, with emphasis on adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, decimals and fractions, measurement, percents, and basic algebraic and geometric concepts.
GED preparatory courses include areas of instruction to assist students in preparation for the GED exam, including reading, writing, literature, mathematics, science and social studies. Instruction for the Constitution test is also given. These courses also include instruction on study skills, as well as test preparation skills.
For the purpose of compliance with Section 511 of Public Law 101-166 (the Stevens Amendment), approximately 16% federal funds, or $82,956 were used in FY11 in support of this program.
